Foundation

The Deutsche Hochschulstiftung is a non-profit foundation for promoting education, schooling, research and science. It was founded in 2005 in Hamburg as a public foundation and works nationally, supporting:

  • Secondary school graduates
  • Students
  • Young scientists and professionals
  • Research and teaching institutions at European universities

Access to higher education is a deciding factor. Academic doctrine presupposes that secondary school graduates will be accepted at a university. However, with the standardised secondary school university qualification, this is growing increasingly difficult, especially in the underrepresented disciplines, where waiting times are also increasing.

The foundation’s projects are dedicated to helping German secondary school graduates and university applicants access higher education and are committed to helping young people get into their chosen field of study at a university in Germany or in another EU member state.

The Deutsche Hochschulstiftung is politically and religiously independent and free from governmental influence. Thanks to donations and the annual yield on the foundation’s assets, the Deutsche Hochschulstiftung has the resources it needs to support education. The foundation does not limit itself to passive support and remains actively engaged by hosting events and programmes. Since 2009, they have partnered with their legal advisor to offer advice to secondary school graduates and their parents about university admissions.

The Deutsche Hochschulstiftung is a member of the Association of German Foundations in Berlin.

The Deutsche Hochschulstiftung finances their projects using income from the foundation’s assets as well as donations.

Promotion

The Deutsche Hochschulstiftung supports selected universities, colleges, and institutes of higher learning across Europe. They promote broader access to education for German graduates, in particular in underrepresented disciplines. Some of their current projects include:

  • 2016: Funding the creation of an endowment chair in the medical department to support the current educational programme and increase the number of students that can be accepted into the programme.
  • 2017: Creating and funding a university institute in the law department to support the education of the next generation of qualified legal professionals in Europe.
  • 2017: Promoting a high quality private programme in natural sciences to help increase the limited capacity for students at state schools.

Another important part of their work is to support post-secondary education among qualified and motivated secondary school graduates and university applicants.

  • Providing grants to cover the printing costs of dissertations and other scientific publications.
  • Awarding scholarships for study and research.
  • Supporting the mobility of applicants who have been accepted into underrepresented disciplines in another European country, relieving some of the pressure on the shortage of university places in Germany.
  • Developing an application procedure for universities that focusses on applicants’ motivation and aptitudes.

We welcome suggestions for physical or theoretical projects from students and secondary school teachers, as well as from universities, colleges, institutions or professional bodies (such as the Medical Chamber, Bar Association etc.).
